BENEFITS OF GARDENING FOR KIDS

Numerous studies show that the outdoors remains the healthiest environment for children and adults. Gardening with children is one of the easiest ways to reap the benefits nature offers. Children with access to green outdoor spaces play more creatively and score higher on tests of self-discipline.

Apparently, we may see how nature is treated these days. It’s a distressing matter to know that people don’t pay attention much anymore to the environmental problems. What may we do about this? It’s as simple as beginning with the children. It’s good to see the children’s interest with environment-friendly activities. One such nature-loving activity that children could easily get their hands on is gardening. Why should you consider gardening for your children?

Here are the benefits that gardening could easily provide the children with:

1. Science

In planting, children are indirectly learned the wonders of science like the plant’s life cycle and how human’s interference may break or create the environment. They may have a primary experience on the miracle of life through a seed. This would definitely be afresh and pleasant experience for the kids.

2. Life

Finding out a seed grow into a tree is even as wondrous as the conception to birth and growth of a child. Eventually, kids will learn to love their plants and appreciate the life in them. Gardening could really aid assume how life should be treated — it should be with care. The requisites to live will be emphasized to kids with the help of gardening – water, sunlight, air, soil. Those requisites could easily be represented to human necessities, i.e., water, shelter, air, food. By merely weeding out, one could educate how bad influences should be avoided to be able to live life smoothly.

3. Relaxation

Studies show that gardening may be reduce stress because of its calming effect. This is relevant to any age group. More so, it stimulates all the five senses. Trust it or not, gardening perhaps used as therapy to children who have been abused or those who are members of broken homes. It aids build one’s self-respect.

4. Quality Time with the Family

You may forget about your stressful work life for a while be soothed by the lovely atmosphere in the garden. You may play and spend quality time with your children. You may talk while watering the plants or you may work quietly beside each other. The bottom line is, always do what you have to do, together with your kids. You might discover a lot of new matters about your child while mingling with them in your garden.

Allow kids become aware of their surroundings wants. And one way to jumpstart that environmental education may be through gardening. It’s hitting two birds with one stone — teach them to respect life while you bond with them.

Talking to a friend of mine today, made me realize, that I should share some of my ideas for creating a successful traditional Thanksgiving dinner in an article.

To take the sting out of the overwhelming arrangements for a grande family Thanksgiving get together, I’ve come up with a fool-proof plan for a successful Thanksgiving dinner. My plan is to ensure there is fun in the entire process for all, but particularly for me, who’s doing all the prep and the this and the that. The secret is: start early! That is: start NOw!

My Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner – Planning Schedule

First week of November
I flip some magazines at the checkout stand to get some visuals, I browse through my favorite cookbooks for recipes & ideas, and I research recipes online. Then, I choose my menu. Weeks ahead. These days I love picking an upscale restaurant and I try to choose the entire meal (nibbles and all) from their recipe books.

Determine how many people will be coming to your Thanksgiving dinner party. The closer you can get to the exact number, the better. It is a good idea to call and confirm regulars, but also if new girl friends will come along, and that sort of thing.

Make a shopping list right away and keep it in your wallet so you can pick non-perishable items up, during your regular shopping routine. Particularly if you need specialty items from those ‘at the other side of town’-kinda places. Cross off what you have bought. Store your Thanksgiving dinner items in a special (marked) section in your pantry, so that everyone knows it’s ‘hands off’ and so that you can easily find them when the day comes.

Second week of November
Now is the time to order, if you want to have a fresh one.
Talking about ordering, I have a huge garden which I like to bring inside in the festive season. However, some of my friends want fresh flower arrangements for Thanksgiving. If that’s you, order your floral centerpiece and other arrangements now so that there is no panic at the florist later.

Third & fourth weeks of November
Buy your frozen turkey. If you leave it till the last minute, you may find that they are all the wrong weight (too small, too large). Also, you typically need about 3-4 days to thaw the turkey in the fridge. Give yourself the good part of a week, and you’re fine.

One week before Thanksgiving
Buy the remainder of the non-perishable items on your list, and a bread for the turkey stuffing. Cube the bread and dry on a baking sheet. If you are baking pies and pastries, now is the time to prepare the dough for your desert and other recipes, and keep them ready in the freezer.

Three – four days before Thanksgiving
Put your defrosting frozen turkey towards the back (i.e. the coldest) part of your fridge. Prepare your cranberry sauce and store in the fridge to let the flavors set.
Prepare your entire table setting. Get your nice cloth table cloths and napkins washed, ironed and ready.

The day before Thanksgiving
Pick up your floral arrangements or ensure they are delivered. Do all your fresh food grocery shopping: a fresh turkey (if ordered, or perhaps at the market), fresh breads, diary, seafood, etc.

Given the size of your turkey and the nature of your recipe, now is the time to work out the exact time required for the turkey to cook in the oven. Allow an additional 30 minutes at the end. Calculate backwards from the time you would like to have dinner, and determine the time the turkey needs to go in the oven.

Defrost your pie dough, prepare and bake your pies.
It’s finally time to prepare the stuffing (omitting any raw eggs till the very last minute). Make stock for the gravy from the giblets that come with the bird.
Wash and prepare all vegetable and other side dishes, so that it is very easy to either reheat of finish them off tomorrow.
Pre-peeled potatoes won’t turn black if you refrigerate them in cold water.

Thanksgiving day – early morning
Set the table for the dinner and chill your white wine.
Take the turkey from the fridge to bring it to room temperature (which may take 2 hours).

Thanksgiving day – late morning
Just before you will put the turkey in the oven, complete your stuffing recipe and stuff the bird.
When you are doing the stuffing, preheat the oven.

Put the turkey in the over and bast it every 30 minutes.

Thanksgiving day – early afternoon
Do more prep work, such as boiling the potatoes and mashing them. You can heat them up just before dinner time. Grind the coffee, and set the coffee maker. Do not make the coffee until just before serving.
Prepare garnishes for all your separate dishes.

Thanksgiving day – late afternoon
Remove the turkey from the oven when it has an internal temperature of 180 degrees. About 30 minutes before your calculated time for the turkey to be ready, start checking the internal temperature at the thickest part of the turkey, which is the thigh. If it is not yet done, check back every 15 minutes.

When you remove the turkey from the oven, it needs to rest for about 30 minutes. Use this half hour to round up the gathering to start getting ready for dinner and move to the table. Get a helper for serving. Instruct someone else to pour the drinks. Make the gravy and complete all your vegetable and other side dishes. Garnish and serve.

Happy Thanksgiving Dinner!

While saunas have been around for a long time, only recently have Americans re-discovered the health benefits of saunas in spas, retreats, and eventually, at home. Many benefits can come from regular use of a sauna, i.e.

Health Benefits

Helps to relieve stress, tension, and fatigue

Increases resistance to illness such as the common cold/hyper-thermia boosts immune response

Increases metabolism & promotes weight loss by burning 300 or more calories in 30 minutes

Improves circulation and promotes cardiovascular wellbeing

Helpful skin care: adjunct in treating common skin ailments such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and cellulite

Helps with Pain relief related to illnesses like arthritis, fibromyalgia, vascular disease, chronic pain, sports injury

Instrumental in the healing process of physical injuries

Useful in relieving allergic symptoms and sinus congestion

Aids insomniacs by promoting sleep

May be useful in drug rehabilitation and detoxification as toxins and impurities are expelled in perspiration (eg. lead and mercury poisoning)

May be beneficial to kidney functions

Other Benefits

Increases property value

Low maintenance requirement

Which Type of Sauna Is Best for You: Wet or Dry?

The more standard US sauna for home and spa uses steam from water over hot rocks. However, up-to-date sauna technology ~ which is behind today’s portable sauna ~ uses non-steam heat. Both ceramic sauna heaters and electrical sauna heaters supply dry heat without steam. But even today, the traditional wet heat sauna kits are still available and popular.

The health benefits are different for each type of sauna ~ which is probably the more important consideration.
E.g. infrared saunas have excellent detoxification properties. Infrared saunas take the detoxifying load off your liver and kidneys by the direct elimination of toxins through the skin. Two to three times more sweat is produced in the far infrared sauna than is possible in traditional hot air saunas. Greater detoxification of heavy metals is achieved, including: lead, mercury, aluminum, cadmium, and fat-soluble toxins.

On the other hand, a steam room is said be particularly helpful for people with breathing troubles. So, the health benefits you are after should indicate which type of sauna you will enjoy most in your home for your own use.

If however you want to install a sauna to increase your property value or at least to gain an edge over competing properties, then perhaps it is useful to know that compared to a steam sauna room, it is easier to use an infrared sauna or other dry sauna at home. You can use a mobile unit and less modifications are required to your home to accommodate it. However, ease of installation should not be your main consideration when purchasing a sauna for your own personal use, of course.

Disclaimer by author & ownhomestyle.com: check with your own health care provider/doctor to see if sauna therapy is suitable for you and if there are any personal restrictions you should be aware of.

Since most garden spaces and landscapes have predetermined boundaries, you typically must focus on what’s inside the garden rather than concerning yourself with the shape or dimensions of a garden area. This supports the spirit of Feng Shui, as it is the art of directing the energy of an environment. It’s less about creating a space and more about shaping it.

When planning and designing a garden or landscape using the principles of Feng Shui, you have an opportunity to work with each of the elements in their truest forms. It’s not just about using color or arranging shapes as you would when working inside. Outside in a garden you can choose and place actual rocks. You can build a pond or a fountain. Plants are no longer the focal point but rather one of the five elements represented in your space.

By using the fundamentals of Feng Shui in combination with your own personality and creativity, you’re sure to create a wonderfully balanced space that is in harmony with your own energy. This will be a space where you feel comfortable, yet inspired. You should feel invigorated and yet relaxed. Visitors should feel welcomed and curious. These are all things that will result naturally from designing your garden or landscape using Feng Shui.

Let’s assume Wood is the most predominant element when beginning the garden. This would make sense because grass, plants, shrubs, these all represent the Wood element. You should probably reduce the amount of wood so the completed garden or landscaping is neither dominated by Wood nor overbuilt by trying to balance the proportion of the other elements to that of the Wood.

Earth will also likely be quite abundant in the beginning stages of a garden or landscape project. Again, you will need to reduce the amount of Earth with the idea that the finished space will be balanced by equal proportion of all five elements.

Keep in mind that the elements can be represented by color, shape, and other ways rather than sheer mass. You need not have a large pond to represent Water. Gravel, glass, or even a meandering groundcover all represent the element Water. Domes and bowls are metal, but so are the colors white and silver. And Fire, which is represented by the colors red and purples as well as lights, pyramids, and arrows, is a very powerful element. Be careful not to let Fire get out of proportion in relation to the other elements.

Planning and designing a garden using Feng Shui is a great way to develop an appreciation for by the art of Feng Shui and the elements themselves. Your garden will be an ever-changing landscape where you will always find balance…a true oasis for your soul.

Welcome back. By now your yard is full of bird feeders, songs, and feathered friends darting about. Are you ready to watch these same birds prepare their nests and raise their young? If so, it isn’t hard! You can now share all aspects of the birding family. Watch the courtship, nest building, laying eggs, feeding the babies, and finally watching the children leave the nest. We love watching the young Robins and Doves learn to fly uncertain short distances. Then one day they seem to amaze themselves and take off in full flight!

Just as certain foods attract certain birds, there are a few things to know about attracting nesting birds. Different birds have different nesting needs. There are ground nesting birds, tree branch nesting birds, tight shrubbery, and hollow cavity nesting birds. Each of these will desire a different type of nesting area or bird house. If you already have trees and shrubs in your yard, you are off to a good start. Ground nesting birds usually build their nest in the cover of grasses or low shrubbery. For others, a man made nesting platform or birdhouse will attract families of birds to your yard. In addition to the nesting platform and birdhouse, help the birds out with pieces of string, straw, hair, paper bits, and other lightweight nest building materials. Remember, we are making them feel at home here.

Different birds will also require other things. Not all birds will use the same shape, size, height, or door opening sizes. As with bird feeders, it pays to know what type of birds you wish to attract. Once a bird has noticed your birdhouse or nesting platform, things heat up. Activity increases and a nest is soon built. You may monitor the nest carefully and take pictures along the way. Just be careful and attentive to the adult birds, knocking gently on the birdhouse to allow the adult birds to leave. Then open the house for a peek or to take pictures. Carefully close the birdhouse and wait a week or so before disturbing the family again. A wonderful bird house spy camera is now available to monitor the nesting family continually without opening the birdhouse or disturbing the nest. These are available to be mounted inside birdhouses or near open nests and provide sound as well as video. You can watch the family nesting process from start to finish.

While decorative bird houses are pretty, they are not always best for the birds. Natural wood at least 3/4 of an inch thick is best and provides insulation from the heat. Always clean the bird house or platform and wash with soap and water after the nesting season ends – usually in July. This way winter birds may use the bird houses and bird platforms for roosting and they will be clean for the next year’s nesting season.

These birds can be attracted to bird houses and usually have 2 to 3 broods per season. Eggs incubate for 11 to 14 days:

Chickadee, Wren, Woodpecker, Bluebirds, Tufted Titmouse, Nuthatch, Flicker and many more.

These birds are attracted to platform nests and will also have 2 to 3 broods per season: Robins, Doves

Good luck and enjoy the families of birds that will return year after year.

By Dennis Estrada

Many home improvements are capital improvements. The Capital Improvements are tax deductible according to IRS if the home improvements meet a number of conditions. The home improvements are permanent addition to the home that increases the value of the home. Hence, the home improvements are substantial in which the value of home property appreciates, the life of home property prolongs, and the functionality of home property increases.

For example, placing a fence, adding a room, installing a driveway, implementing a swimming pool, installing a new roof, setting a new built-in heating systems are capital improvements.

The capital improvement increases the value of your home. For example, adding a new room increases the value of home. The new room increases the ability of the property to earn more income. Thereby, the value of home property increases as well.

Another example, adding a garage increases the value of home. Renters will pay extra for a parking space. And again, the new garage increases the ability of the property to earn more income. Thereby, the value of home property increases as well.

On the other hand, the home repairs are not home improvements according to the IRS. Repairs are expenses that keep the property in good repair. And, the rental property owner can claim the as expenses on the year that the expenses are made.

For example, repainting the walls, patching the roof, installing the wallpaper, replacing the carpet, sealing the links, and repairing the windows are home repairs.

To be able to claim capital improvement tax deductible, the homeowner needs to use the Depreciation Method. The Depreciation Method is a way to recover the cost of capital improvements thru depreciating the expense over the life expectancy of property.

One way to heat less is to avoid heating rooms that are not being used. If you have a spare bed room that is only used for storage you can shut off the heat going to that room and close the door.

You may be able to reduce the heat in some rooms that are used only for short periods of time. Try closing the louvers on the warm air outlet to reduce the amount of heat that you let into the room.

Another way to heat less is to turn the thermostat down when no one is home. If your house is empty during the work or school day, turn the thermostat down 10 or more degrees so you heat less. If you go visit the grand kids on the weekend turn the thermostat down so you heat less.

Here is where you can save with a better thermostat.

Replace your old fashion thermostat with a new digital thermostat. By using a digital thermostat, you can program it to preheat the house. When you know that he house will be warm when you get home you are more likely to turn in way down when you leave. Set your thermostat to warm up you house ready to welcome you home. A good programmable thermostat can be bought for under $100. The $20 on sale basic model I bought a works just fine.

In our house, the thermostat is set at 68 during the day and 62 at night. That is cooler than some folks like, but we like it that way. Using a programmable thermostat makes setting the temperature down at night easy and you do not have to worry about forgetting. Set it to turn the heat down about an hour before bedtime. We program ours to start warming the house up an hour before we get up in the morning.

Remember heat less by keeping the thermostat low. Turn it down when no one is home. Turn it way down when your mother in law visits. To get the feel of being there turn it down during TV football games. Turn it down and buy a new sweater with the money you save.

It is cheaper to use an extra quilt or an electric blanket and turn the thermostat down even more at bedtime. I sleep better when it is cool in the house.

Remember heat less and save more.

Home renovations are exciting and new. However, it can be a time of stress, though all the hard work eventually pays off. If you have a pet, home renovations can become dangerous, as well as upsetting for your precious pooch. Here are a few helpful hints to keeping your dog safe and secure during your home renovations!

First, if you have decided to hire workers to renovate your home, you will need to consider your pet’s reaction. If your pet tends to be overtly protective of your home and family, you will most likely want to take a moment to introduce your pet to the workers to assure them that the workers are nice and there is no one or no thing to be afraid of. Show them that the workers are good people, not bad people and that they are there to help.

A major aspect of home renovation that is sometimes difficult for pets to adjust to are the loud noises that almost always comes with construction work on your home. Hammering, sawing, and banging are constant sounds that can be upsetting to your pet. The best thing to do is t place your pet in a smaller space (such as a laundry room or office) with their bed, a comforting blanket, and a few of their favorite toys. Don’t forget to periodically check in on them and give them comfort to assure your pet that everything is all right and that you have not forgotten about them. If the weather is nice outside and you have a securely fenced in backyard, you may want to put your pet outside for part of the day. There, the noise should not be quite so loud and upsetting.

Because the safety of your family and pets are of the highest priority, be sure to be on the lookout for hazards around the house once the workers go home. There can often be nails, sharp objects and projections lying around that could easily injure you or your pet. Other hazards include paint (wet or dry), power tools, paint remover or thinner, wood stain, sawdust, minerals, tape…almost anything!

Bare wires and electrical cords are also often present during reconstruction. These cords and wires certainly pose a threat of shocking or possibly even electrocuting your pet if they are chewed on or even touched. You can either find something to cover such spots, or investing in baby gates to block off the construction areas may be your best option.

The best way to care for your pet during home renovations is to consider your pet, and put yourself in their paws. Try to see what they see, and consider what may be interesting or intriguing to them. If you plan on extensively renovating your home, you may want to consider renovating one room or space at a time; this will make it easier on you, your family, and your pet. It is easier to stay out of one room instead of a whole floor. Though it may take longer, the safety of your family and pet is well worth the time spent!
